Do you know after one hour of sitting, your fat-burning enzymes slow down by 90%?
Sitting is the new smoking. Ever heard of that? We are sitting way too much in our offices with desk jobs. Also in our cars, on sofas, at work in front of our workstations et cetera all day long. This all is making us comparatively less active and leading us to obesity and other health issues.
The study shows that 80% of jobs are classified as sedentary and a study from archives of Internal Medicine concludes that there is 40% increased risk of dying for people who sit all day. Moreover, The World Health Organization listed inactivity as the fourth biggest risk factor for global adult deaths.
So in order to be more proactive and productive at work, we can, in fact we should follow steps that leads us to combat inactivity and achieve good health. We will discuss some of the few ‘easy win’ ways to get moving and be active throughout the day at workplace with little to no extra effort.
Walk the way to work
If you can bike or walk even run to work, that is an excellent case. But of course not everyone live close to their workplace so it’s better to park your rides way farther from your office and walk towards your office. This will fit and add more activity to your day. Moreover this will help clearing gloomy thoughts in your mind.
When you enter your office building, don’t try to take elevators up to the office instead go for stairs. No matter how much elevators tempt you. Don’t. Make taking stairs a habit until it is no longer a choice in morning. Taking stairs is the best way to raise energy, lower body fats, build muscle tone and also it improves your brain health and there is nothing doubting that.
Ditch call or email, Walk
Use every opportunity you have to get up from your desk and walk around. Suppose you have to tell or discuss something about your work related stuff to your colleague, instead of calling or emailing them, get up from your workstation and walk towards them and chat them face to face. This will give you extra benefit of social interaction.
Use standing desk
Get yourself a standing desk instead of a regular desk or working in a cubicle. Standing up to work can be of great choice. This not only is good for your back and body posture but helps burn your calories too than sitting and you will enjoy benefits from the ergonomic setup. Or if standing desk is not possible at your office whatever the reason maybe, even then it’s okay. Hey! You can do simple office yoga exercise be seated in your office chair. It too has a lot of benefits including reduce tension in shoulder and legs, improves balance and flexibility.
Have a standing meeting
Sometimes we all have meetings at our workplace that take too long when can be accomplished in 15-20 minutes. Try organizing a standing meeting. These type of meetings increase efficiency, more importantly get you out of chair and make you do free flowing conversations. Also change of scenery helps reduce tensions and make you come up with productive ideas. Moreover, standing meetings make sure that things don’t drag on unless necessary.
Get moving during lunch break
In your lunch break don’t just order your lunch and wait for it to get delivered instead choose to pick-up your lunch. You can get accompanied by your coworkers and have a little chat session with them on the way. Or if you bring lunch from home then make sure to take a quick walk around your office. Your body will be thankful to you.
Walk while using mobile phones
Since these days we all have smartphones so it’s better to take a walk while you’re on your phone having conference calls or checking responding to emails and tweets. This will help you cut down your laziness at work.
Track your steps
Use a pedometer or now there are many applications for smart phones that work as a pedometer and help track your steps and keep a record of your burned calories. This way one will stay motivated to do more.
Make these steps your habits bit by bit and you will notice that over time these small habits can create a massively great difference in your health and working routine at your workplace.
